Man Utd tying down this £31m star to a new contract is a massive statement of intent by Solskjaer

Why tying Lindelof down to a long-term deal is good business for Man United

Victor Lindelof has signed a long-term contract for Manchester United, which will keep him at the club till 2024 with the option of an extension.

The Swedish international was one of United’s best players last season. The Swedish Player of the Season joined United after spending a few years in Benfica.

His Manchester United career had a bit of a stuttering start after a howler against Huddersfield Town spelt trouble for him even before it’d kicked off. The Swede, however, folded his sleeves up and made a fantastic comeback the following season.

The £31m star impressed over the two group games against Juventus, which showed his potential to the Old Trafford faithful. He didn’t look back since those games and made one of the two centre-back spots his own.

Lindelof is very calm and composed on the ball and loves driving from the defence to the midfield, helping United build their attacks from the back.

The problem for United was finding a reliable partner for him and they seem to have got that in Harry Maguire and the two of them have been part of a backline that has conceded the least number of goals so far in the Premier League along with Liverpool.

Lindelof has improved on his physicality and looks more assured in his battles with burly forwards. United have also signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is a fantastic defensive full-back, from Crystal Palace.

Luke Shaw was the Manchester United Player of the Season for 2018/19 and David De Gea has signed an improved deal, giving Manchester United a backline that they can depend upon for the foreseeable future.

Another reason why this deal is good is that, in recent years, the Red Devils have been letting players run their contracts and that has caused larger problems throughout the club with wage issues and no real vision for the future.

That seems to be changing after signing 3 players this summer, who are important for the short-term and the long-term, while also keeping players like De Gea and Lindelof in the club for the long-term.

They’ve also got rid of players who were underperforming for a long time and would not be associated with the Manchester United of the past.
