Tottenham opinion: Pochettino shouldn’t sign Said Benrahma

Tottenham’s title race ended the moment the club sold Mousa Dembele and did not bring in the Belgian’s replacement. An integral part of their plans for the season, the 31-year-old decided to leave for China, leaving the North London side without a midfield maestro.

Their season crumbled after that, with injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli. Yet they managed to get through that, thanks in part to Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura as they stepped up to ensure their place in the top three.

But with Arsenal, Manchester United and even Chelsea close behind them, the race for the top four is still on. Things will get heated, with less than 8 games left in the season and for Tottenham, it’s a measure of their season.

The North London side were outsiders for the title race but were still in consideration. Yet, their season collapsed and a lack of new additions can be cited as the reason. Hence, they need new signings in the summer but adding the wrong players would further hurt the club.

Football.London (h/t TeamTalk) has reported that Tottenham are in the race for Said Benrahma and it’s a move they shouldn’t make. The Brentford forward has been in sensational form this season, having produced 24 goals in all competitions.

But given the number of forwards that Tottenham have at their disposal, it’s a move that makes no sense.

The likes of Lucas Moura, Heung-Min Son and even Erik Lamela are available for Mauricio Pochettino to use, and he has done so. Both Moura and Son are among Tottenham’s best players this season, scoring 17 goals between themselves.

While Son has dominated that statistic, Moura has been at his electric best at times, terrorising the Premier League with his pace and agility. That exactly shows why a move for Said Benrahma is not required. The 23-year-old is not an atypical Mauricio Pochettino signing.

The former Southampton boss prefers players on the younger side but hardworking ones. While Benrahma has been an attacking masterpiece in the Championship this season, the 23-year-old is far from being hard-worker defensively.

Instead, he prefers to save his energy for the offensive side of the game, and while there is no big issue with that, it shows why the move won’t work for Tottenham.

Conclusion

While there is no doubting Said Benrahma’s talent, he is not the player who Tottenham need at the moment. What the North London side really need is a world-class star, someone who can lead them to the Premier League title that they so desperately need.
