Bournemouth Opinion: Should the Cherries make a move for Jack Butland?

Sky Sports (h/t Daily Star) has reported that Bournemouth have entered the race for Stoke City star Jack Butland. At the moment, the Cherries have been depending very heavily on 39-year-old Artur Boruc, who has played every game since January.

Though Boruc has been doing relatively well since becoming the first-team goalkeeper, a move makes sense.

Asmir Begovic hasn’t played since January, and that looks like it will continue with Sky Sports and the Sun revealing that the former Chelsea star is out of favour with Eddie Howe.

That has been the major reason as to why Begovic has been dropped and it gives the Cherries a massive problem. But by making a move for Jack Butland, it’s one that the club can fix.

The 25-year-old is being wasted in the Championship and given that the Potters are not doing too well, things could get worse for him.

Yet, that hasn’t stopped Butland from performing, with the English international even getting a call-up to the England team for this international break. He is easily among England’s best in his position.

For Bournemouth, what makes him perfect is the fact that at 6’4” he has incredible reach and is much taller than Boruc. However, unlike either of Bournemouth’s current options, Butland, despite being so tall, is incredibly agile. The 25-year-old is very quick off his line, which will pay dividends in the long run.

Given that Eddie Howe does like playing out from the back or like most modern managers, likes his goalkeepers to use his feet – Butland is perfect in either role.

Not only is he composed with the ball, but the Stoke City star is comfortable with the ball at his feet. That combined with all his other features makes him an absolute must-have.

Furthermore, for Bournemouth, buying someone from the Championship makes a lot of sense. The success of the likes of Chris Mepham and David Brooks this season proves that theory.

Cherries cannot afford to miss out on signing a young, talented goalkeeper like Butland.

Conclusion

Jack Butland is a supremely talented goalkeeper who has proved his loyalty to Stoke City by staying with them even after they got relegated.

However, the time is right for a move back to the Premier League, and it’s one race that Bournemouth have to win as well. The Sun has revealed that Crystal Palace are also in the hunt, and that could complicate things.
