Like Father, Like Son? – Why Tottenham Should Look To Sign Giovanni Simeone This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur have been quite calm this summer and the fact that they have been one of the most consistent sides in the competition in the last two years shows that Mauricio Pochettino is more than happy with the options at his disposal for this season. However, with teams around them spending on some world class players, Spurs will be tempted to spend big as well and Pochettino is looking at some bright prospects this summer.

The likes of Ross Barkley and Riyad Mahrez have eluded Tottenham’s grasp but one player they are now close to signing is Argentine starlet Giovanni Simeone. According to Argentine journalist Lucas Ajuria, the €10m rated 22-year old is on the verge of joining the Premier League, and Tottenham Hotspur are understood to be the front runners for his signature.

Born and brought up in Madrid, Spain, Simeone started his youth career at River Plate – a club he joined as a 13-year-old. He grew through the ranks and made it to the first team in 2013. But just 27 appearances later, he was sent out on loan to Banfield and then was sold to Italian outfit Genoa.

He picked up some serious form in Serie A, bagging 12 goals and an assists 35 appearances, establishing himself in the first team. However, his performances have not gone unnoticed and he has been linked with a move to England recently.

A centre forward with min numbing finishing abilities, the 22-year old is one of the most exciting strikers in his age group at the moment. Also known for his dribbling and technical abilities, Simeone likes to have the ball at his feet and manoeuvre space to try and find the back of the net. He is a natural goal scorer but still has to work on his strength and ability in the air, failing which, he might become a liability in England.

He is a hard working player, who loves to give his all in every game, which will attract Pochettino. At 22, he has represented the U23 side for Argentina and has gathered loads of experience. Spurs want him as a backup for Harry Kane this season.

The English international is easily the best goal scorer in England but Pochettino lacks a suitable replacement or backup for him as he has failed to get the best out of Vincent Janssen last season. Simeone may not be able to do much better than Janssen but he has more potential and can easily push the Dutch star for a place in the first team, which should improve the overall quality in the squad.
