Why Tottenham Hotspur should re-sign Andros Townsend in the summer

Three successive victories have kept Tottenham Hotspur in touch with Manchester City and Liverpool, who dropped points in the 1-1 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium on Monday.

Tottenham’s title hopes were written off as soon as Harry Kane got injured and despite two disappointing cup exits in one week, they have found a way to still grind out wins in the Premier League. However, Mauricio Pochettino will be disappointed with the fact that his club failed to sign a single player over the two transfer windows.

Even though Spurs remain in the title race, Pochettino should start planning for the next season. One player he could certainly try signing in the summer transfer window is Crystal Palace star, Andros Townsend.

At 27, Andros Townsend is reinventing himself. He is entering his prime after finally establishing himself as an effective player for Crystal Palace. In fact, he helped Crystal Palace dump his former club, Tottenham, out of the FA Cup last month.

Andros Townsend joined Spurs at the age of 8 and did not leave until he was 24. The Englishman went onto represent his boyhood club 93 times but spent most of his time on loan at lower league clubs when on the books of Spurs. He left the North Londoners in 2015 for Newcastle United and after the Magpies got relegated in 2016, the 27-year-old joined Crystal Palace.

At Palace, Andros Townsend has become a firm fan favourite for his selfless attitude, top work rate and desire to compete until the final blow of the whistle. Almost four years after leaving Tottenham, Pochettino should try bringing back the England international to North London.

The 27-year-old’s pace, power, stamina and work rate would make Spurs more potent going forward. Townsend has a wand of a left foot that is capable of delivering spectacular goals and his ability to pick out a pass as well.

Apart from Lucas Moura, Spurs lack genuine pace in their attack. Townsend’s addition would give Pochettino’s side plenty of pace and an outlet for counter-attacks too.

Townsend is entering the peak years and this summer would be the perfect time for Pochettino to re-sign him. Surely, he’ll love to come back to the club where spent 16 years.
