Tottenham would do themselves a world of good by reviving interest in this industrious German ace

Why Tottenham should rekindle their interest in Julian Weigl

Tottenham Hotspur have looked far from convincing in their first couple of games in the Premier League season.

No department in the field has looked very assured and Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t been his usual self either, looking visibly frustrated by quite a few things.

Not all of Spurs’ new signings have settled in yet and that might take some time. There has been a lack of balance and a player Spurs should’ve looked at is Julain Weigl from Borussia Dortmund.

The German international has fallen by the wayside in recent years with managerial changes at Dortmund, leaving him unsettled with a particular role at the Signal Iduna Park.

He has started this season a lot better though and this could be just the time for Spurs to latch onto him as they were linked with the German not so long ago.

Mauricio Pochettino would be a fantastic manager to help him regain some of his best attributes. Pochettino has a reputation for reigniting careers, as he has shown with Lucas Moura and is a very flexible manager in a tactical sense.

Weigl is someone who likes to play from a deeper position and dictate the tempo of the game.

Weigl has a fantastic range of long passing and while he’s not the most industrious or dynamic player, he uses his positioning to read the danger and intercept the ball.

Eric Dier is more of a centre-back as he’s very unadventurous with his passing and Winks can’t play in the deepest holding role, as he’s an easy target for the opposition markers and can also become awfully safe as has been in some of the bigger games.

Weigl would help Winks play a little higher up the pitch, where he can turn opposition markers around and beat the press.

This is also a strength of new signing Tanguy Ndombele, who is also quite a press-resistant player and does his best work just ahead of a holding midfielder.

Spurs were supposed to make a push forward but it looks like they’ve already given up on any ambition to win silverware so early in the season.
