English news outlet Football.London (h/t AS) has reported that Real Madrid have pulled out of the race for French star Adrien Rabiot. The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season with PSG and that makes him a bargain buy for any club.
However, the Los Blancos have been heavily linked with a move and seemed to be Rabiot’s best place to continue his career. Yet, things have now gone pear-shaped and it looks like the 24-year-old has no place left in the world that he can join but for Tottenham. It’s the perfect move.
The North London side have also been linked with a move in the past for him (Daily Mail) and it would be a great move. Manager Mauricio Pochettino needs a midfield maestro, especially after he let Dembele leave without a replacement.
Arguably Pochettino’s worst move as a Tottenham manager will go down as letting Mousa Dembele go without a replacement. The Belgian was an eccentric player to say the least, but he was Tottenham’s maestro in the midfield.
The moment he left for China in the winter window, their season collapsed along with their chance of a Premier League title. And while Moussa Sissoko has done well since his transition into a central midfielder, the former Newcastle United man isn’t a title-winning option.
Adrien Rabiot on the other hand, is a player who can lead Tottenham to titles. The Frenchman may have an attitude problem but he still remains among the best in his position and he hasn’t played a single game for PSG since mid-December.
The Parisians have benched him permanently till he either signs a new deal or leaves the club, with the latter looking the likely option. This means that any move in the summer would be a no transfer fee deal, with Tottenham only having to pay his wages and a signing bonus.
It would help save their transfer budget and allow the club to target other areas in the future. Furthermore, Rabiot’s ability to dictate the play and play as a double pivot or even as a single pivot will make him the perfect man for Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
It will allow the North London side to improve their team further as they try to chase after Manchester City and Liverpool.
