Why Tottenham should not hire Massimiliano Allegri

Tottenham Hotspur have gotten off to a very poor start, despite setting the bar quite high in the last few seasons under Mauricio Pochettino. The midweek loss to Colchester United on penalties was a new low.

They’ve only gotten 8 points in 6 games and haven’t looked very convincing in most of their games besides the one against Crystal Palace. Pochettino looks a visibly frustrated figure on the touchline and the Argentinian might be on his last legs at Spurs.

It is now being reported by the Daily Mail that Massimiliano Allegri has been touted as a potential replacement for the Argentinian boss. Allegri left Juventus after four successful years at the club after last season.

Meanwhile, Pochettino’s critics never fail to remind everyone that he’s yet to win something as a manager.

Spurs have some world-class players in their squad but they also do not have silverware. With many of their best players heading into their prime, they seem to have lost the motivation. A new manager might be just the push they need, even if it is for the immediate future.

However, if Spurs are looking to find a new manager, they should wait. Despite Allegri’s record, he is a bit of a pragmatist, meaning the football might not be as entertaining as it is under Pochettino.

Allegri is a tactically flexible coach, who likes to chop and change formations and systems depending on the game. He’s not necessarily defensive but simply a manager who puts a result above anything else.

His system is capable of helping Spurs in the short-term but it might affect the side in the foreseeable future. Allegri was fairly successful at AC Milan but left the club in a shambles later.

With that in mind, Tottenham aren’t the sort of club that can risk doing that as they don’t have the financial power to buy themselves out of trouble.

Spurs need to stick with Pochettino. He’s the reason why so many of their top players have stayed at the club for all these years and one musn’t forget that there’s still a long way to go this season.
