Time for goodbye? Tottenham parting ways with their £65,000-a-week star could turn out to be a win-win for both parties

Why Tottenham need to sell Victor Wanyama in the winter window

Victor Wanyama was one of the top midfielders in the Premier League during his Southampton days. The Kenya international would break up the play effectively and was a success after signing for Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the past two seasons have been testing for the club and the player. Wanyama has struggled for fitness and games at the club and has fallen down the pecking order.

Tanguy Ndombele, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko seem to be ahead of him, and Pochettino also has the services of Oliver Skipp to call upon.

Victor Wanyama

The 28-year-old needs to play regular games, and The Times (h/t Daily Mail) claims that Wanyama is one of the players that Tottenham want to get rid off in the winter window.

Time to end Wanyama’s time at the club

The £65,000-a-week midfielder has also struggled with the physicality of the league since last season, and Spurs cannot rely on his services regularly. The 28-year-old would be better off in a less strenuous league and has been linked with a return to former club Celtic (h/t Daily Mail).

A permanent move would be the best option for Tottenham but a loan deal in January with a clause to seal Wanyama’s exit shouldn’t be ruled out.

While the Kenyan provides a lot of experience to the Tottenham side, a lack of minutes on the pitch isn’t going to help either party. Spurs have struggled for form this season and getting rid of deadwood seems to be a plan for Pochettino.

The Argentine saw several first-team stars leave in the summer, and that policy could continue in the winter window. Wanyama also needs to play regular football and a move to Scotland would not be a bad option for the 28-year-old.

The Kenyan’s injury issues are a sticking point, with him only registering 46 games over the past two seasons.

Verdict

Tottenham could still do with some fresh faces coming in during the January window. Wanyama’s sale could provide some funds to reinvest in the side, and it will be interesting to see which club could sign him in a couple of months.

Spurs could also promote some youngsters to the first-team and selling Wanyama should see a slot open up in the team.
