Go for it Mourinho – Tottenham’s best interests are in selling this 21-year-old on-loan ace

Why Tottenham must permanently offload Cameron Carter-Vickers

According to football.london, Stoke City have confirmed that Tottenham will recall Cameron Carter-Vickers from his loan spell.

Carter-Vickers, 21, came through the ranks of Tottenham’s youth system but could not make it beyond four first-team appearances for the club and is no longer the hyped youngster he was four years ago. He has seen the ups and the downs of the game.

Having served loan spells at Ipswich Town, Swansea City and Sheffield United, he started the season well at the bet365 Stadium with 10 starts to his name between September and November.

After the arrival of Michael O’ Neill in mid-November, Carter-Vickers lost his place in the starting line-up and made just 2 appearances at right-back under the current boss.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s side have managed to cross the line in most of the games but they have been inconsistent at the back, letting in a number of goals. Their 2-2 draw in Carrow Road at the weekend showed their inability to keep clean sheets.

The arrival of the Portuguese saw a change in their fortunes but they have managed to avoid conceding only on one occasion, against Burnley. Despite having some world-class and experienced defenders, the Lilywhites have been shaky in defensive situations.

Veteran Toby Alderweireld has just extended his contract at North London but Jan Vertonghen is yet to make an upper-shift in his game. Davinson Sanchez has been partnering with the former in recent weeks.

Youngster Juan Foyth has not been in action for quite some time but is another promising defender available at the Portuguese’s disposal. With four quality centre-backs, it would be best if the hierarchy decides to part ways with Carter-Vickers.

The United States international has not settled well in the team and his loan spells have also not helped his cause.

It would be a waste of resources to keep a player, who would eventually end up in the bench. By allowing him to leave, they can stock up the cash for a new and established defender instead.

And it would be good for the 21-year-old to move permanently to a lower division club and continue his development process. It may also be helpful for him to make it to his national squad on a regular basis.

Verdict

With all this being said, it would be wise for Tottenham to offload Carter-Vickers permanently and make space for a new recruit to add some stability in their defensive unit.

This move would benefit the England-born American in reviving his career.
