Why Tottenham have missed a trick by not signing Dani Alves

According to a report in the Daily Star in the summer, Tottenham Hotspur were looking to sign legendary footballer, Dani Alves.

The Brazilian international was fresh after a Copa America title and would’ve been available on a free transfer but ended up finally going back to his country and joining Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.

Despite being 36, he still looked fit as a fiddle and would’ve massively helped changed the mentality of this Spurs squad, while also helping the younger players.

He showed in the last season – and during the Copa – that he’s not lost any of his technical abilities. He’s always been an extremely athletic footballer and with Spurs only having Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back to rely upon, they might be short in that area.

Spurs finally completed some transfer business over the summer, signing the likes of French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, English youngster Jack Clarke from Leeds United, Giovanni Lo Celso from Real Betis and Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham. But they still look a little short in certain areas.

Dani Alves is one of the most decorated players to have ever played the game and he’s also quite versatile as he could very easily have played in midfield and added some creativity to a side that has struggled to break down teams this season.

This Spurs side has played alongside one another for a long time now and are yet to win any silverware for all their efforts.

Spurs were in a title race for a while but lost steam towards the end of the season and almost lost their top-four spot at one point in time.

They were expected to mount a challenge this season but have looked far from doing that based on their early performances and getting someone like Dani Alves would’ve brought some much-needed energy to a side that looks like it has stagnated.

Spurs play their next game against a notoriously difficult Crystal Palace side, who have beaten Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the last 10 months at their home ground.

It won’t be easy and it would’ve been best if they had signed Alves when they had the chance.
