Tottenham’s strength between the nets would receive a boost by signing this 24-year-old Serie A whiz

Why Thomas Strakosha would be a solid long-term investment for Spurs

Back in June, a report from the Metro had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha to replace Hugo Lloris, but a move didn’t go through.

Thomas Strakosha, 24, who signed for Lazio from Greek club Panionios in 2012, has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Serie A since taking the number one spot in 2016. He finished the season with an Achilles problem which saw him play through the pain to win the Coppa Italia with Lazio, keeping a clean sheet as his side won 2-0 over Atalanta.

The shot-stopper is under contract until 2022, meaning Lazio were understandably reluctant to sell him during the summer transfer window, although the report claims Strakosha was tempted by a move to England.

As far as Tottenham are concerned, they have endured a slow start to the new Premier League campaign. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side were at their sublime best on Saturday as they thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The victory over Palace should come as a much-needed boost for Pochettino’s men in a bid to shrug off their slow start and garner some momentum.

In goal, Hugo Lloris has been decent until now but he isn’t getting any younger. Set to turn 33 in December, the France no.1 helped Tottenham go all the way to the Champions League final last season, beating some of the in-form European sides, such as Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, and Ajax along the way.

However, he also made some errors and hasn’t been at his best since the last few campaigns.

Lloris is ageing and can’t continue performing with the same level of consistency he did during his prime years at the club.

He has been a fantastic servant for the north London club, but perhaps the time for Pochettino and co. has come to move on from the French World Cup winner and replace him with Thomas Strakosha.

Strakosha, currently one of the finest goalies in Serie A, is certainly more confident with the ball at his feet than Lloris and is a more than capable shot-stopper too. He has the ability to play the ball long and set up attacks for his side. Standing at 6ft 4in and with a huge reach, the Albanian international has a great command in the box as well as in the air.

The Athens-born star has a couple of areas that he’ll need to improve but there is no doubting his ability and potential to replace Lloris. Hence, Tottenham must rekindle their interest in Strakosha when the transfer window reopens in a few months’ time.
