Tottenham’s right-back unit would receive the power it desperately needs by signing this 28-year-old Belgian star

Why Thomas Meunier to Tottenham Hotspur would be a solid move

According to Daily Mail, PSG right-back Thomas Meunier was on the top of Tottenham Hotspur’s wishlist during the summer transfer window but the Paris-based club didn’t let him go. Tottenham wanted to add depth to their squad and provide competition to Serge Aurier for the starting place.

However, after an unsuccessful attempt, coach Mauricio Pochettino backed Kyle Walker-Peters to fill the gap left by Kieran Trippier, who joined Atletico Madrid at the beginning of the season.

Trippier was Hotspur’s first-choice right-back during his fours years’ tenure at the London club.

It was not easy for Walker-Peters to replace a well-established full-back. Although the 22-year-old started well and was given three Premier League starts at the beginning of the season, a hamstring injury has sidelined him from the rest of the games so far.

Pochettino turned towards his Aurier to find a solution and the Ivorian international impressed the Argentine coach with an immediate impact.

Aurier provided two assists in his first league appearance of the season and help the Lilywhites in a 4-0 win over the London rivals Crystal Palace. He also helped the Lilywhites earn their first clean sheet of the season.

Aurier failed to replicate his form against Leicester City in the next game week, however, and suffered a 2-1 defeat at the home of the Foxes. The situation turned worse when Aurier picked up a red card against Southampton in the following game week and Pochettino had to turn towards defensive midfielder Moussa Sissoko to start at right-back.

The Lilywhites are clearly lacking a well-established right-back as they struggle in the lower half of the top half of the table with just 11 points in eight games.

The current situation clearly suggests the Lilywhites should reignite their interest in Meunier and sign the Belgian international in the winter transfer window.

Even though Meunier is yet to score a goal or set up any teammate in his five league appearance this season, he is coming off some great performances last season.

The 28-year-old scored three goals and assisted as many in his 22 league appearances. He also kept a neat discipline record by receiving the yellow card just twice in those matches.

Meunier also proved his worth at the FIFA World Cup by scoring a goal and setting up team-mates twice in just five appearances at the biggest stage of football.

Conclusion

Keeping all such records in mind, Pochettino must make an official bid in order to try to lure the Belgian international in the Premier League.
