Why PSG’s Adrien Rabiot Would Be A Perfect Long-term Replacement For Mousa Dembele

Tottenham Hotspur endured yet another season without any trophy but they still stand as one of the most consistent sides in England. The manager has specific transfer targets in his mind but is yet to make the first signing of the summer.

He has been linked with some interesting and exciting players and the latest name thrown around in the mix is PSG’s Adrien Rabiot. Also wanted by Arsenal and Juventus, Rabiot has just two years left on his current contract and could be available for as less as £20m this summer. So, is he the right man for the Spurs?

Born and brought up in Saint-Maurice, France, the 22-year old spent his youth career at seven different clubs, including Manchester City in England. But he only made a name for himself with PSG, where he was promoted to the B-side back in 2012. Just two years and 9 appearances later, he moved into the senior side, establishing himself in the first team in the last two years.

He now has 103 senior league appearances for the French club and at just 22, has also made his international debut. He is an experienced player for his age and can probably walk into many top clubs in Europe.

A central midfielder by trait, Rabiot is a complete player who can be effective at both ends of the field. He is an excellent passer of the ball with great vision while his dribbling abilities are also mesmerizing. He can find his man from long and short ranges and loves to play short passes to get behind the opposition defence.

His strength and stature make him strong in the air, and in hold up play, while the smart head on his shoulder allows him to take decisions quickly, staying a step ahead of the opponent on most occasions. He made 27 league appearances last season and is an established star in France. But Italian star Marco Verratti has been preferred over him in crunch games, which might see him look for an exit this summer and there are very few destinations better than Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino loves players of his age group and Rabiot will probably walk into the first team next season. Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele did a decent job last season but Dembele is now 30 and the only backup they have in the side is Eric Dier.

They have Harry Winks who is growing by leaps and bounds but Rabiot is an upgrade on those names and could be the long term successor of Dembele in London.
