Why Anthony Martial should snub Juventus and join Tottenham

Manchester United endured a largely underwhelming campaign last time out. Although the club finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League, the gap between the clubs was huge – 19 points to be precise. Jose Mourinho’s team also failed to win the FA Cup after losing 1-0 to Chelsea in the final at Wembley. As a result, the Red Devils’ ended their season without silverware.

Considering Mourinho’s personality and attitude, the Portuguese manager will be itching to get back to winning ways next season. United have already signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred for a reported £52m and defender Diogo Dalot from Porto for a reported £19.3m.

While more signings are expected at Old Trafford this summer, the club also might have to offload one or two of their own players to make room for new additions. And one player who has been linked with leaving United in the summer is Anthony Martial. The winger has grown frustrated over his limited role in the squad, and the Frenchman’s agent has confirmed that his client is looking for a move elsewhere.

Serie A champions Juventus were linked with Martial but latest reports claim that a deal is unlikely to happen as the Italian club refused to meet Manchester United’s £55m asking price. Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with showing interest in the highly-rated winger. Spurs are currently short of wingers and a move for Martial makes sense.

January signing Lucas Moura is the only out-and-out winger in Mauricio Pochettino’s team. The Argentine manager often deploys Heung-Min Son as a striker or in a supporting role just behind the striker, which leaves him short of wingers.

Martial joined Manchester United from Monaco in 2015 and has thus far made 86 Premier League appearances, scoring 24 goals and provided 15 assists – a pretty impressive record for a player, who has often been restricted to a bench role. Martial has pace, dribbling skills and is capable of pulling off the sweetest of finishes.

The 22-year-old’s debut for the Red Devils will certainly go down in history books as he came off the bench to score against Liverpool.

At the time, it seemed like Martial’s destiny was to become a United legend. But in football, anything can happen. And in Martial’s case, despite possessing all the qualities to play for a top Premier League side, he is still a bench warmer at Old Trafford.

He would be a great addition for Spurs, who have emerged as a force to be reckoned with under Pochettino. And at White Hart Lane, Martial would certainly receive regular game time. The Frenchman’s move to Tottenham would benefit all parties involved.
