Watford are said to be willing to offload their captain Troy Deeney this summer. The Hornets would consider selling the striker for £10m. He still has 3 years left on his current contract with Watford but manager Javi Gracia is looking for reinforcements after Deeney managed just 5 Premier League goals last season.
Stoke City, who suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, have been heavily linked with making a move for the striker. But here’s why Leeds United should also consider signing him this summer.
The 29-year-old scored 13 goals in Watford’s first season back in the Premier League in the 2015/16 campaign. He scored 10 goals in the league the following season and managed just five last term. But still, Deeney is an excellent striker and one of the key figures in the Watford dressing room.
There are a few reasons why the former Walsall man would be a good addition to Leeds. First of all, Deeney has admitted that his father was a Leeds fan, while he himself has followed the club closely.
Secondly, the current Watford captain has a proven track record at the Championship. He has scored 78 goals and provided 33 assists in 207 games in the division. His amazing performances, especially in the 2014/15 season, helped the Hornets to earn promotion back to the Premier League.
And lastly, he might fit in well with new Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa’s favored 3-3-1-3 formation. The Argentine manager likes strong and hard-working forwards, and Deeney is just that. Bielsa worked well with Fernando Llorente at Athletic Bilbao, and there’re some similarities between the Spaniard and Deeney.
