Opinion: Everton would be foolish to let Marco Silva leave despite poor run of form and here is why

Why there’s no point in sacking Marco Silva

Everton suffered a massive defeat yesterday at home to newly-promoted Sheffield United, who weren’t at their best and were fortunate to come off with all 3 points.

The pressure has started to mount on Marco Silva, with many Toffees fans questioning the Portuguese and a report from the Guardian suggesting that his place at the helm is under threat.

Everton were certain that he was their main when they signed him last season after getting rid of Sam Allardyce and relentlessly pursuing his signature when he was at Watford.

Silva got the Merseyside outfit to an 8^th place finish last season but many believed that there wasn’t a massive difference in Silva’s methods to that of previous managers.

While Silva will be held ultimately responsible, there is a larger problem at Everton that no manager can really solve. Everton are an example of poor team-building and no manager will really be able to succeed.

Everton had Ronald Koeman not so long ago and he had taken them to a 7^th place finish, which was led by players like Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley in the 2016/17 season.

After losing them, Everton did not really find adequate replacements for them and got a manager like Sam Allardyce into the club as they were struggling at the bottom of the table.

He got his own signatures in Cenk Tosun and Elaquim Mangala on loan, who were suited to a very different brand of football to the previous manager. They then went back to a more progressive manager in Marco Silva and this would require another change in style, which would take time to adapt to and players.

This season, they arguably lost their best player in Idrissa Gueye to Paris Saint-Germain, who has made a flying start to his campaign and were also unable to keep Kurt Zouma, who was on loan from Chelsea, leaving their defence with too much to do in every game.

Their only creative outlet is Lucas Digne and he’s a full-back. Gylfi Siggudson’s underlying numbers have fallen down as Digne takes a lot of the set-pieces.

Gueye’s performances also enhanced the performances of players like Andre Gomes and it is clear to see that he’s not good enough with the Senegalese’s engine around him.

Everton already had a lot of potential goalscorers in Richarlison, Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun.

What they were lacking in was players who could create opportunities for these quick players to get on the end of things and they’ve failed to address that, while also losing out on the engine in their midfield and the athleticism of Zouma, leaving them short in both areas of the field.

Everton have been chopping and changing managers and buying players without much thought and it’s unlikely to change as they were heavily linked with Wilfried Zaha all summer, who’s not a creative player either and is mostly a dribbler and someone with an eye for goal as a second-forward.

It doesn’t seem like they are planning ahead in the recruitment department and if they continue in such vein, they’re going to continue struggling.

No manager is going to be able to achieve Everton’s lofty ambitions with such poor recruitment. Sacking Marco Silva is not the answer.
