Sunderland Opinion: Should Sunderland sign Ruben Sammut permanently?

The Chronicle Live has reported that Chelsea starlet Ruben Sammut is currently on trial at Sunderland. A midfielder by trade, the Englishman is looking for a better path to the first-team and believes that the Black Cats can give him that, but more so, it’s Sunderland who need the starlet more than he needs them.

While they do have the likes of Lee Cattermole, Max Power, Grant Leadbitter, Dylan McGeouch, Luke O’Nien and Bali Mumba, the Black Cats still lack a holding midfielder.

The trio of Leadbitter, Power and Cattermole has done relatively well in the holding midfielder but they’ve failed to impress on a more consistent basis.

If nothing else, manager Jack Ross needs someone who can provide that creative edge from deep inside the midfield, and that’s exactly what Sammut specializes in.

A deep-lying midfielder for Chelsea’s U23 squad, the 21-year-old worked his way through the youth teams before finding a spot with the U18s. It’s there that the English midfielder played an integral role as the Blues won three consecutive FA Youth Cups between 2014 and 2016.

This earned Sammut the captain’s armband for the U23 side and even a call up to Scotland’s U21 side, making his debut in October 2016.

In search of first-team football, the young midfielder joined Falkirk in the summer of 2018 but failed to do enough to earn an extension beyond his six-month loan deal. He has since returned to Chelsea but Sunderland need to snatch him up before somebody else does.

That combined with the fact that the Sunderland Echo has revealed that the 21-year-old’s contract is expiring at the end of the current season further improves their chances. He made his debut recently for the Black Cats’ U23 side, against Stoke City, and while they lost the game 3-1, Sammut had a lot of bright moments.

But once again, that has only come in flashes. He’s failed to produce consistent performances for the club but under manager Jack Ross, that could improve, with the 42-year-old Sunderland boss able to bring the best out of his players.

The likes of Benji Kimpioka, Denver Hume and even Bali Mumba have all been given a chance to shine under Ross, and this shows that Ruben Sammut would be given his chance to make an impact with the Black Cats.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
