Why Fernando Torres Would Be A Brilliant Signing For Gerrard’s Rangers

It has been a massive month for Rangers. They have lost to Celtic twice, conceded the title yet again, fired Graeme Murty and finally, have hired a very inexperienced manger but a legend of the game in the form of Steven Gerrard.

Surely, Gerrard will have a recruitment plan to execute at the Ibrox. It’s natural for media to link Rangers with Gerrard’s former colleagues and picking through this transfer mire to find a credible link is tricky.

However, one name that does seem to make a little more sense is of someone that did play alongside Gerrard at Liverpool, Fernando Torres.

The experienced striker is coming to the end of his contract with Atletico Madrid and he has not been offered a new deal by the Spanish club.

Unfortunately, he has been on the subs bench for most of the season but when he has started, he has 3 goals in 10 appearances, which is not bad at all in La Liga.

With a record like that in La Liga, if the conditions were correct and he settled, he could easily tear it up in the Scottish Premiership. No disrespect to Boyd or Morelos (the top scorers in the league) but on his day, Torres is a class above, even though he is not getting any younger.

Torres would be a great deal for Rangers for many reasons, not only because he would score many goals for them but also a name as big as his would massively boost shirt sales to give them an extra revenue stream. A marquee signing like that would also bring the fans back on their side after a strange season at the Ibrox.

There are no doubts that Torres’ wages would be a stretch for the wage budget at Rangers but if the Scottish club really wanted to show a signal of intent, then they should break the bank and get him.

The partnership of Gerrard and Torres reaped dividends for Liverpool and maybe it will prove fruitful for the Gers as well.
