According to the Express, Premier League new boys, Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to make a sensational summer swoop for Stoke City goalkeeper, Jack Butland. It is reported that the Wolves are ready to make a £35million move for the 25-year-old English goalkeeper.
Stoke City are enduring a calamitous season in the Premier League and have been relegated to the Championship. They are currently at the bottom of the table with one game left to play this season.
Now that they’ve been relegated, it would be difficult for Stoke to keep hold of their star goalkeeper, Jack Butland.
Butland has established himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the Premier League. In 34 appearances this season, he has kept 6 clean sheets for the Potters. However, he has conceded 58 goals in the league, which is really poor considering the standards he has set over the last few years.
Stoke are set to play in the Championship next season but Butland will be hopeful of remaining in the Premier League. The 25-year-old has already been offered a lifeline by Wolves, who have put Butland on top of their shopping list.
Nuno Espirito Santo should be busy in the summer as he would look to bolster his current squad to rub shoulders with the Premier League biggies. Wolves have a good financial backing and their owners are ambitious as well, which could see Santo get a good amount of money to spend in the summer.
Wolves are looking at Butland as a potential signing to replace current No.1 goalkeeper John Ruddy, who was terrific between the sticks in the Championship this season.
Ruddy arrived at Wolves from Norwich on a free transfer last summer and has gone on to establish himself as the best goalkeeper in the Championship. The 31-year-old has kept a staggering 24 this clean sheets this term, which was enough for him to earn the Championship’s Golden Glove award.
However, Santo seems to want a seasoned Premier League campaigner in goal and has set his sights on Butland, who, on any day is better than Ruddy. Butland is in the race to make the England No.1 spot his own and will definitely be on the plane to Russia for the World Cup.
In all fairness, it would be next to impossible to stop Butland from leaving Stoke now that they’ve been relegated. He is one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the top-flight and a move to Wolves would be a tantalising prospect for Butland to reject.
