Why Southampton should revive their interest in Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin had been linked with a return to Southampton and there isn’t a better time for the player and the club to reunite. Schneiderlin made his name at the St.Mary’s under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman.

He was touted as one of the best midfielders in the league at the time and his partnership with Victor Wanyama was one of the most dominant in the Premier League at the time. Sports betting site and several other football pundits predict the fact that the midfielder can revive his career should he move to his former club.

His performances in the 2014/15 season did not only get him an international cap but also a big jump to Manchester United.The Frenchman looked like the solution to United’s long standing midfield problems since the departure of Paul Scholes and the ageing Michael Carrick but Schneiderlin found himself alienated in Louis Van Gaal’s rigid possession-based system. He wasn’t the only one who suffered under Louis Van Gaal though and he was seen as surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho the following summer and sold to Everton in the January window.

He was now reunited with former boss Ronael Koeman, however, that didn’t help much either as Everton were no different from Manchester United at the time. Everton were also in a sorry state, switching between various formations and it eventually saw Koeman getting sacked early in the 2017/18 season.

Everton were in a relegation battle and Sam Allardyce was called upon to steady the ship. His style differed vastly from Koeman’s. Allardyce was released off his duties at the end of the season and there was yet another manager with a different philosophy in Marco Silva. Silva opted for the likes of Andre Gomes and Idrissa Gueye in midfield and Schneiderlin ended up spending even more time on the bench.

The constant change of managers have had a negative effect on his game and it’s probably time that Schneiderlin move back to Southampton and revive his career under a more stable environment. Southampton since Schneiderlin’s departure have also had a rocky path and it’s perhaps time that the two reunite.

Schneiderlin will have a fair idea of what to expect from Ralph Hassenhuttl having worked under a coach like Mauricio Pochettino, who also drilled his players with double sessions for his high-intensity and high-pressing style. He would have no problem meeting those demands and maybe a little push is all that the 29-year-old Frenchman needs.
