Why Signing This Ligue 1 Defender Means A Big Deal For Tottenham As He Will Be A Great Addition To The Side

One of the best defenders to come out of Ligue 1 in recent years has to be Samuel Umtiti. The Lyon star was one of the best players at the club last time around and his performances in the back four led him to be part of the France team for the Euro 2016 competition.

There have been many top clubs looking to sign him and one such team that is in the running for the signature of the 22-year-old centre-back is Tottenham. The London club has been in the market for a long time to find a decent centre-back, especially as cover for Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Even though the Premier League side have Austrian Kevin Wimmer as a decent enough defender but they need more quality to ensure they have cover next season and more importantly have a player for the future.

Umtiti is only 22 at the moment and is destined for great things in the future. The defender does not really have any such negatives to his gameplay and has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Barcelona being just one of them.

The French star seems to be extremely comfortable on the ball as well, something which will be a great help for Tottenham or any other club that does try to sign him and he is great at holding the ball as well, again something that will be a bonus if he does move to the Premier League in the near future.

Tottenham on their part would have to pay a huge amount if they are to sign him up from Lyon. The French club would not want to lose out on one of their stars for cheap money and Spurs would have to bid against the likes of Barcelona which will not be an easy task.

If somehow, Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy do pull this off, it would be a coup for many reasons. Manchester United was able to get Eric Bailly from Villarreal even without the attraction of Champions League football while Tottenham do also have that to bring players that they want.

Umtiti though will have a lot of options in the summer and it will be tough to battle some of the other clubs but if Spurs are looking to move into the next set of top teams in the world, they have to bring in such players, even if it means paying a bit more money.
