Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should sign Alejandro Gamarra?

Sheffield United are very much in the mix for automatic promotion after dealing Leeds United a major blow with a narrow 1-0 win at Elland Road on Saturday.

It was shaping up to be the biggest game of the Championship season for both teams, with so much at stake for Leeds and Sheffield United at this crucial juncture of the campaign. The Blades not only came out of Elland Road with all three points but also with a much-needed push to go all out in the last eight games.

Chris Wilder has done a fabulous job at Bramall Lane, building a top squad with a limited budget. He has brought a winning mentality and character to the team that will augur well for the rest of this season.

Although the United manager’s focus will be on achieving promotion to the Premier League, he should also start planning for the 2019/20 campaign from now on.

The Blades have an ageing attacking unit, with Billy Sharp, Mark Duffy and David McGoldrick all above 30. Kieran Dowell and Gary Madine are 21 and 28 but they’ll return to Everton and Cardiff City respectively after the expiry of their loan spells this summer.

If Sheffield United are to do well in the potential 2019/20 Premier League campaign, young blood needs to be pumped in. Knowing Premier League is way different than Championship football, Wilder should reinforce his squad in the summer but put more emphasis on his attack.

That said, the Blades must target New York Red Bulls forward Alejandro Gamarra. Alejandro Gamarra, 24, joined NY Red Bulls from Argentinean club Huracan in February 2018. He has done very well so far, scoring seven goals in 42 appearances in the Major League Soccer.

The 24-year-old is a technically-gifted and tactically versatile player whose main strengths are dribbling, pace, long-range shooting and vision.

The two-cap Paraguay international is the one who keeps things ticking in the midfield for NY Red Bulls with his quality on the ball, eye for passes and relentless work rate.

Gamarra not only has the ability to link up with his teammates and contribute to the build-up play but he is also a composed finisher in front of goal.

The diminutive attacker is very difficult to stop when in full flow and has the technique to keep hold of the ball in tricky situations. He uses his low centre of gravity to glide past players with ease, giving the opposition plenty to think about his next move.

Conclusion

Gamarra has the right attributes to really prosper in the English game. And Wilder’s Sheffield United would be the perfect club for the Paraguayan international to display his true worth.
