Wolves signing this 26-year-old Bundesliga outcast would be hugely helpful in their European adventure

Wolves opinion: Nuno Santo should go all out to sign Marcel Tisserand

Wolverhampton Wanderers took a step closer to winning the FA Cup after knocking Manchester United out of the competition in the quarter-finals at Molineux on Saturday.

Wolves blew away the Championship last season with their attacking style of play, winning the title with a staggering 99 points. Back to the Premier League this season after an 8-year absence, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team has exceeded all expectations.

The team is currently seventh in the table, playing a counter-attacking style of football that is such a treat to watch.

Credits to Nuno for building an excellent side that has been a thorn for the big six this campaign. With Wolves currently 7th in the league and into the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United, they are well on course for European football next term.

The Midlands outfit have shown a lot of ambition under Chinese consortium Fosun International in the past few transfer windows. If Wolves are to compete in Europe and make a mark, they’ll need more investment in the summer.

One area that needs strengthening is the defence, with Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett being the club’s only central defenders. Romain Saiss’s versatility has been valuable for Nuno but they truly need another body in the defence if they are to challenge for a top six finish next season.

That said, the club should target Wolfsburg defender Marcel Tisserand this summer.

Marcel Tisserand, 26, joined Wolfsburg from FC Ingolstadt in the summer of 2018 after impressing on loan last season. However, the 26-year-old’s move to Wolfsburg hasn’t gone according to the plan. He has managed just four Bundesliga outings, with the last game coming in September.

Come summer, the DR Congo international should leave Wolfsburg to reignite his career. And Tisserand’s situation at the Volkswagen Arena hands Wolves a boost to lure him away to Molineux at the end of the season.

Tisserand is a versatile defender who is adept at operating in central defence, right-back and as a defensive midfielder. The Congolese is a tall, robust and no-nonsense defender capable of dominating strong forwards in the air.

He has a good turn of pace as well, which helps him in making recovery runs. Furthermore, the former AS Monaco and Toulouse man boasts of significant game-reading ability at the back and often puts his body on the line to make last-ditch challenges.

Conclusion

To put things into perspective, Nuno needs to invest heavily in all areas at the back to bolster squad depth. Tisserand’s stock might have dipped a bit due to his lack of game time at Wolfsburg this season but Wolves would do themselves a world of good by landing him ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
