Rangers signing this talented 25-year-old with 8 goals and 5 assists would be a brilliant move by Gerrard – opinion

Rangers FC opinion: Should the Gers make a move for Roger Assale?

Earlier in March, Alfredo Morelos gave a massive lift to Rangers fans by penning a new contract with the club, extending his deal at the Ibrox until 2023.

The Colombian, 22, has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season for Steven Gerrard’s side, establishing himself as one of the deadliest poachers in European football.

Morelos has been earning all sorts of plaudits this term for his goal-scoring exploits but his teammates have struggled to come up with the goods as Rangers are ten points behind league leaders Celtic.

While Rangers are unlikely to be able to muster a title challenge at this stage of the season, Steven Gerrard should start planning for the next season.

One of the most important tasks will be to iron out the team’s over-reliance on Morelos by adding another striker. And the Rangers boss would do a brilliant job by signing Young Boys striker Roger Assale.

Roger Assale, 25, has been in fine form for Young Boys this season, chipping in with 8 goals and 5 assists in 31 appearances in all competitions thus far.

The Ivorian forward isn’t a traditional number nine who can hold onto the ball and bring others into play. His primary attributes are pace, agility, movement and finishing ability.

The 25-year-old is a tricky customer in 1vs1 situations and almost unstoppable when he is on song. Standing at 5ft 6in tall, Assale uses his low centre of gravity to deadly effect, gliding past players and twisting and turning to bamboozle defenders.

He excels when running in behind the opposition’s defence, making him such a difficult player to mark in the final third. Assale has an absolute hammer of a right foot and is adept at finding the net with powerful drives.

He is also creative in finding his teammates in promising scoring positions and this an added feature to his game.

A threat in the box, the Ivorian’s finishing skills are exceptional and he’s exactly the kind of player who would complement Morelos up front.

Verdict

While Morelos is capable of delivering 20-25 goals in a season, Rangers need to add another prolific goal-scorer to their ranks if they are to realistically challenge Celtic for the title next season.

Having almost handed Celtic another Scottish Premiership title, the Gers have to invest heavily in the summer and Assale, with his pace, power and finishing ability, should thrive under Gerrard at Ibrox.
