Rangers’ chances of winning the title is all but over after dropping points at home to Kilmarnock this past weekend. They are currently 10 points behind leaders Celtic, with less than a handful of games to play.
Hence, instead of dwelling on this campaign, the planning of how to make things right in the future must be an important discussion in the panel.
While they need improvements in quite a few areas on the pitch, there is something which they need to work upon to become a title-challenging team – rebuilding of defensive structure.
They were linked (h/t Daily Record) with a move for former Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel but that move didn’t go through. Here’s why the Gers must make sure that the 34-year-old joins the club in the summer transfer window instead:
Currently, Rangers have Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall as the options for the centre-back position. While the former two are there on a permanent deal, the latter is on a loan spell from Nottingham Forest.
Goldson has had a decent season but neither of Katic or Worrall has really looked at home. As a result of that, we have seen Steven Gerrard’s men concede silly goals and make bad mistakes at the back. This is not just the case in the league, but also in Europe and cup competitions.
If a team strives to win titles/cups, they have to eradicate the mistakes at the back and build a team around that to make a solid claim of coronation.
Hence, getting someone like Skrtel would be ideal. At 34, he can still play a couple of seasons and stabilise the back-line.
The former Liverpool man has tonnes of experience and is a quality centre-back who can lead the defence and work with Goldson or Katic to form a solid partnership.

All in all, a move for Skrtel seems to be a good solution for Rangers in the summer transfer window. With young players around, the Slovakian can help them grow, building a solid foundation for the team.
The 34-year-old’s contract runs down at the end of season at Fenerbahce, hence, a good wage offer can lure the player to re-unite with his former teammate Steven Gerrard.
