Norwich City Opinion: Should Farke sign Kevin McDonald?

According to January’s report from the Sky Sports, Fulham were willing to let Kevin McDonald leave the club on loan. However, not a single club came forward to sign him on loan and the Scottish midfielder has since stayed put at Fulham.

Kevin McDonald, 30, joined Fulham from Wolves in 2016 and was an integral player under former manager Slavisa Jokanovic as the club won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season.

But he has managed just 11 league appearances this season and has found game time tough to come by under Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked earlier this week.

Ranieri’s Craven Cottage departure was confirmed on Thursday, following the previous day’s 2-0 defeat away at Southampton, with first-team coach Scott Parker taking over as caretaker boss.

The Italian won only three of his 17 games in charge of the west London side and left with the club placed 19th in the table and a massive nine points away from safety.

With the Cottagers very likely to suffer relegation, Norwich City should snap up Kevin McDonald ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Norwich City have emerged as surprise promotion candidates after currently finding themselves on top of the Championship table. They are one of the favourites to secure promotion and have been playing some wonderful football this season.

Very few people expected Norwich to be in this position now, but shrewd recruitment and a clear style of football deployed by Daniel Farke has paid off handsomely and the Canaries remain in a fantastic position. They continue to impress in the Championship.

Despite a dozen games still to go, Farke needs to start planning for the next season if his team are to do well in the Premier League. The German tactician needs to bolster his squad in the summer transfer window to make Norwich well-equipped for competing with the teams in the top-flight.

Norwich’s current crop of midfielders have performed extremely well but barring Alex Tettey, none of them has the Premier League experience. Therefore, it’s important for Farke to add some much-needed experience to his midfield and McDonald would be a good fit at Carrow Road.

When building up from the back, McDonald usually drops in between the two centre-backs, filling in the gap of space when the team spreads out wider. He remains extremely calm when under pressure and uses his vision and technical ability to find a passing option.

The Scotsman’s work rate is excellent and he covers every blade of grass to keep the team ticking. An experienced player, McDonald is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is adept at breaking up the play.

Despite the fact that he is 30, the Scotsman has still a lot to offer and that should make him a brilliant prospect for Farke’s Norwich.
