Sheffield United signing this big, physical South African would take them to another level – opinion

Sheffield United Opinion: Would Lebo Mothiba be a good fit for the Blades?

Sheffield United are flying in the Championship, losing once in their last ten games and without defeat in any of their previous six. The Blades are third in the table and a win in the Steel City derby would see them leapfrog Leeds United into the second spot.

The league table does not lie, and Chris Wilder has his team playing to a set system in a very well organised manner, which has defeated a number of big teams this season.

Sheffield United are excellent to watch when they are in rhythm and they’ll be keen to tighten their grip on the automatic spots in the upcoming games. With United looking like one of the contenders for promotion, Wilder should start planning for the next season from now on.

He needs to persuade the board to invest heavily in the summer transfer window to rub shoulders with the teams in the Premier League if they get promoted.

One of the areas the United boss should strengthen is the forward department. Skipper Billy Sharp has been excellent, shouldering the responsibility of scoring goals for the Blades. He has been ably supported by David McGoldrick, who has 11 strikes to his name. But the South Yorkshire outfit would need more firepower up front if they achieve promotion.

To put things into perspective, Wilder should make a move for Strasbourg forward Lebo Mothiba.

Lebo Mothiba, 23, has been turning heads across Europe with his displays in Strasbourg colours this season. He has netted 7 goals in 22 Ligue 1 appearances so far this term, impressing with his tricks, skills and link-up play.

The South African is a big, physical player who can outmuscle defenders in the box and score goals. He is not only a clinical finisher in front of goal but he can also contribute a lot with his ability to set up goals.

Mothiba is a pacey centre-forward whose clever movement and aerial ability in the box make him a handful for the defenders.

One of the 23-year-old’s key attributes is his knack of making runs in behind defences, while his subtle movement and link-up play will also give a different dimension to United’s play in the final third. He is deadly inside the box, always on the hunt to pounce on the opposition’s mistake.

Conclusion

Still only 23, Mothiba has his best years ahead of him and that said, Sheffield United should not hesitate to splash the cash to sign him ahead of the upcoming season. It could be the signing to take Wilder’s team to another level.
