Newcastle signing this explosive 22-year-old hitman would reinvigorate their attack line massively

Why Newcastle should make a move for Martin Terrier in January

Back in January, the Chronicle had reported that Newcastle United were interested in signing Lyon forward Martin Terrier.

Martin Terrier, 22, joined Lyon a year ago and spent the second half of 2017/18 season on-loan with Strasbourg. He managed 32 appearances for Lyon last season, operating mostly on the left-wing and ended the campaign with nine goals.

Newcastle are in desperate need of goals, with Steve Bruce’s forwards simply lacking any rhythm and fluency in their play.

The club shattered their transfer record in the summer by signing Joelinton from Hoffenheim and while he has shown glimpses of his potential, the burly Brazilian is yet to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Miguel Almiron has shown great energy, pace and movement but is yet to score or bag an assist in Newcastle colours since signing from Atlanta United in January. The Paraguayan needs to quickly start adding goals to his game to help reduce the burden off Joelinton’s shoulders. Barring Almiron and summer signing Allan Saint-Maximin, the Magpies also lack creativity in the final third.

Both Steve Bruce and the fans know that they need reinforcements. That being said, Newcastle must definitely reignite their interest in Martin Terrier.

Terrier can play as the striker as well as a wide forward. He could be an ideal addition alongside Almiron and Joelinton. The 22-year-old has the pace to make runs in behind and stretch the opposition defence, especially in counter-attacks. He always tries to link up with the striker and create goalscoring opportunities.

The Frenchman likes to take promising positions in the final third, making his off the ball movement very deceptive for the opposition. He is good in the air and has enough pace and acceleration to rip apart defences on his day. A clinical finisher in front of the goal, Terrier would not only add flair and creativity to the Newcastle attack but also depth to Bruce’s squad.

More Newcastle United News

Safe to say, Newcastle have struggled for goals so far this season, partly because of lack of support to their lone striker Joelinton. Terrier could be a good fit at St. James’ Park, as the Frenchman possesses the qualities to be Joelinton’s perfect foil.

Verdict

Newcastle are in desperate need of goals and they will need to bring in a forward if they want to avoid the drop. Signing someone like Terrier would truly be a smart piece of business in January.
