Newcastle United opinion: The Magpies should go for Danny Drinkwater

According to a report from The Sun, Chelsea are prepared to sell midfielder Danny Drinkwater this summer despite the transfer ban.

Frank Lampard, the new Chelsea boss, has been assessing his squad during their tour of the Far East in matches against Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona and is prepared to let Drinkwater leave.

The English midfielder, 29, who played a starring role in Leicester City’s shock Premier League title success of 2016, has played just 23 times since his £35m move to Chelsea and last season, played just for half an hour in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City in August 2018.

His career has stuttered since arriving at Stamford Bridge and the need to get back playing first-team football means that the 29-year-old must leave the club.

A couple of months ago, The Chronicle claimed that Newcastle United were tipped to sign Drinkwater from Chelsea but the links have since gone cold of late. Nevertheless, the Magpies must rekindle their interest in the midfielder and sign him ahead of the next week’s transfer deadline.

Steve Bruce has made quite an impression over Newcastle since replacing Rafael Benitez at the start of this month. There’s not long left until the new Premier League season kicks off.

If Bruce intends to have a strong Premier League campaign he will need to add more players to their thin squad, which undoubtedly lacks quality at the moment.

That being said, a player of Danny Drinkwater’s quality could make a massive difference at Newcastle.

The 29-year-old has vast experience in the Premier League and also played in the Champions League with Leicester City. The English midfielder’s quick passing, tackling and work rate could be a useful trick when playing on the counter-attack for Newcastle.

Bruce needs fresh impetus in midfield following the departure of Mohamed Diame. Drinkwater—a Premier League winner—could work really well in a midfield trio of Jonjo Shelvey Sean Longstaff or Isaac Hayden.

He has rarely played in the last 12-15 months but remains a brilliant distributor of the ball with an excellent engine.

Verdict

Hence, Newcastle must pursue Drinkwater and get a deal done this summer.

A move to St. James’ Park could provide a new start for the 29-year-old midfielder, who still has a lot to offer despite a forgettable time at Chelsea. In turn, Newcastle would be able to break into the top-10 of the Premier League table this season.
