Man United would be wise to refrain from shelling out £90m to sign this 20-year-old starring for PL rivals

Why Manchester United should stay away from Declan Rice

Manchester United have been linked with a ridiculous £90 million transfer for West Ham’s Declan Rice according to a report from the Sun. Rice is coming off the back of two games for the English national team where he wasn’t particularly impressive.

Rice is only 20-years-old and has a very bright future ahead of him but he’s definitely not worth the price that is being quoted. Rice started as a centre-back but had his breakthrough last season with a role in holding midfield.

He was particularly impressive in some of the bigger games, where West Ham sat back and absorbed pressure but he’s never looked as good in games where the Hammers have enjoyed a lot of possession. He’s not the most mobile and is quite poor at recovering.

At his best, he’s like the 3rd centre-back in possession. However, he isn’t the most adventurous in his passing and United already have a player like Nemanja Matic, who offers the same and has more experience and despite ageing quickly, still offers everything that Rice offers.

United have some very young midfielders coming through in the academy who have a higher ceiling than Rice and should be in the first-team in 2 years and are likely going to get a lot of game time in the Europa League this season.

Rice got a chance just like the current United youngsters in James Garner and Dylan Levitt and made full use of his opportunities and Garner and Levitt are more than capable of doing the same as United are quite light in the midfield department.

Rice has a few qualities but he’s probably a player who is just right for West Ham as he hasn’t shown too many outstanding qualities besides having the composure, which are simply not enough for a club like Manchester United.

Comparisons to Michael Carrick are premature as the current United assistant coach was very press-resistant and also one of the best at breaking the lines with his passing and Rice has hardly shown the ability to do either.

He’s mostly just someone who helps in the build-up but even in an England shirt, it’s Harry Maguire who usually has to drive into midfield and that’ll be the case at United as well.

United have shown signs of improvement in recruitment with all 3 new signings being impressive since the season has started and they need to continue in that manner. Rice isn’t good enough.
