Manchester United currently sit in 8th place on goal difference and while it’s a long season, the squad depth has already come into question, making the game against Arsenal on Monday night a must-win already. This is particularly with regards to the midfield and the forward line.
The defence has been mostly responsible but they simply couldn’t stop the individual brilliance of West Ham’s two goals. The forward and midfield department needs to take the pressure off of them by scoring the goals necessary to win football matches.
Without Pogba in the team, there is no creativity and with Ander Hererra leaving, there’s not enough mobility and bite. United lack dynamism in the midfield.
Scott McTominay has done a fine job so far and Fred has looked good when he’s played this season, which is a good sign that he’s maybe finally settled into the physical nature of the Premier League.
The less said about Nemanja Matic the better as he doesn’t look like he isn’t going to stay after this season based on the performances he has put in so far this season. One player who would’ve helped was French World Cup winner, Blaise Matuidi, who was linked with a move in the summer.
Matuidi would’ve been a stop-gap at 32-years-old but would’ve still been an upgrade on Ander Herrera as he would’ve provided the engine in that team that the team have linked since his departure.
Matuidi has also been Paul Pogba’s partner in the midfield for a long time now and the two are very good mates in the international team.
Matuidi has won titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus and would’ve been the sort of leader in midfield that would’ve had everyone’s respect in the dressing room. He’s been capped 82 times for his national side and would’ve inspired everyone else around him.
He’s primarily left-footed and likes to make late dashes into the box and play low-crosses for his forwards or chip in with goals himself.
He would also have had no trouble in playing in a league due to his physicality and reputation for being a fierce tackler. He would’ve been a short-term option but United could’ve used it to confirm a higher finish in the league.
