According to a report from Calciomercato, Manchester United are plotting a move for Juventus full-back Joao Cancelo.
The Portuguese, 24, joined Juventus from Valencia last summer and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best full-backs in Europe despite missing a month’s action due to an injury.
Joao Cancelo’s sizzling displays in the Serie A haven’t gone under the radar, with Manchester United interested in securing his signature this summer. While Juventus would be reluctant to let go of one of their prized assets, the Reds must do everything possible to land the Portugal international.
United’s interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that Antonio Valencia’s career at Old Trafford would end in the summer after 10 years. The club did not trigger a one-year extension on his contract before Friday’s 5pm deadline.
Valencia became the club captain last summer but has suffered an injury-blighted campaign, managing only nine appearances across all competitions. The 33-year-old Ecuadorian is out of contract in the summer.
With Valencia looking set to leave United in the summer, Ashley Young having reached the twilight years of his career and Diogo Dalot just 19, the club could do a very good job by signing another right-back. Cancelo fits the bill perfectly at United.
Cancelo operates with a lot of pace, flair and energy that helps him keep the opposition on their toes. The Portuguese is an offensive full-back who can also play on the left.
It’s important for a full-back to be defensively diligent first and the 24-year-old has it in spades.
A player characterised by high levels of concentration and composure, Cancelo is known for his wonderful tackling technique and superior game-reading ability at the back.
A tactically versatile full-back, the 24-year-old has shown the ability to play on either side of the backline, making him a valuable asset to any club.
He rarely gets caught out of position and even if he does, the former Inter Milan and Valencia man possesses the recovery pace to bomb back and steal possession. Furthermore, the 24-year-old isn’t the one to shy away from a tackle and would fit the Premier League.
Cancelo has already shown his quality in Juventus colours this season. He is 24 and has settled admirably well in the Serie A, so it would take a lot of effort to bring him to the Premier League.

But United should do everything in their powers to lure the Portuguese away to Old Trafford as he could be the ideal candidate to replace the outgoing Valencia.
