Why Eliaquim Mangala Would Be A Great Signing For Wolves

Eliaquim Mangala always fits into the mould of a footballer who promised much but never quite delivered at the biggest of stages. Maybe that’s why Mangala is destined to shine at clubs which require a lot more graft and hard work.

Rumours linking the 27-year-old Frenchman to Wolverhampton Wanderers are ones that need to be taken seriously. Nuno Espirito Santo could do with some serious pedigree at the back and a move for Mangala – a player once touted to be world-class, is not a bad option at all.

On the face of it, this seems like a very prudent move for the Frenchman. He is entering his prime years as a footballer and a move to Wolves would see him start every game. Also, he has shown that he can shine when deployed as a ball-playing defender, so a move would represent good business for all parties involved.

Will He Readjust?

However, what needs to be seen is whether or not he can adapt to the Premier League once again. His primary attributes would push the argument in his favour. He’s got a good jump and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He does lack a sense of awareness though and can be found wanting if exposed to one-on-one against a pacey forward.

If the Wolves can figure out a system where they can play to Mangala’s strengths, the move would work well. He is prone to injuries and Wolves have to consider this factor when they decide to make a move for him.

A Great Option At The Back

Mangala is adept at soaking pressure and with Wolves’ exciting attacking play taking a lot of responsibility off their defenders, he could just fit right in. He is also a good physical specimen and this could prove to be a handy asset in the Premier League.

Mangala may not take too much time to adapt to Nuno Espirito Santo as they share a common agent in Jorge Mendes and common ties back in Porto. It will be interesting to see how Mangala would react in the Premier League next season and Santo will have to try to motivate the player and get the best out of him if they are to succeed.

City, however, will hold out until they get a high price for the player. Mangala could just experience a second coming in English football and maybe with time, and the right manager, he can finally fulfil his massive potential.
