Why re-signing Ibrahimovic in January is a no-brainer for Man United

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been linked with a sensational return to Manchester United in January, as per the Express.

The former Sweden international joined LA Galaxy in March after Manchester United agreed to release him from his contract. The veteran striker found opportunities limited once he returned to full fitness due to the arrival of Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

And after making the move to Major League Soccer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been an instant hit with 21 goals and nine assists in 25 appearances.

The Red Devils signed Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. That move worked wonders as the Swedish ace netted 29 goals in 53 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side in all competitions during his time in England.

And following his move to the MLS, Ibrahimovic is back to his sublime best and that has seen Mourinho eye an astonishing loan deal in January. But does that move make sense for the Red Devils?

Manchester United have endured a disappointing start to the new season, having already lost three times and are 9 points behind leaders Manchester City after just nine games. That has put Mourinho’s position at Old Trafford under some threat but the Portuguese manager turned a corner after his team staged a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Newcastle United 3-2 before the second international break.

Truth be told, the Red Devils are lacking a leader in the dressing room, someone who is willing to take the responsibility and guide the team through a difficult period. Ibrahimovic is exactly that kind of personality – a leader on and off the pitch and also a strong supporter of Mourinho.

Bringing back Zlatan Ibrahimovic would make plenty of sense. Despite his age, one cannot argue his ability to turn around a game by producing a moment of genius on the pitch. The 6ft 5in ace is a confident, aggressive and powerful, and 21 goals in such a short span in the MLS offers proof that there is still life in the Swede.

Ibrahimovic may not be able to produce goals as consistently as he did in his 18-month spell at United but his presence in the dressing room would be mightily significant.

United need someone who can lead them by example and restore the harmony in the dressing room. This is why Ibrahimovic’s return makes so much sense to United. The big Swede would also offer a different dimension in the attack.
