Salt in the wounds? – Everton will surely regret losing this 29-year-old dynamo after his impressive CL display

Why losing Idrissa Gueye will cost Everton massively this season

Everton fans have had a week to forget after their loss to Bournemouth. To rub salt into their wounds, the footballing world was singing praises of their former midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who was outstanding in the Champions League group stages for his new club, Paris Saint-Germain, against European giants Real Madrid.

The midfielder was truly fantastic and despite having a player of such quality, Everton did not utilize him wisely. In fact, he was the sort of player that one could build a team around.

Instead, a lot of poor recruitment over the years – along with all the managerial changes – has created an imbalance. Every time a Romelu Lukaku or an Idrissa Gueye leaves the club, they don’t use those funds in the right manner.

They solve one area of the pitch but leave other areas open and vice versa and the same has happened this season. A lot of Everton’s players looked better when they were paired alongside Gueye but they aren’t the same without him. Andre Gomes is a prime example of exactly that.

This is a poor way of team-building and they’ve still not addressed their issues with creativity, as they’re still depending on Lucas Digne, who is a left-back.

There are plenty of players in the market who would have provided a similar output but they’ve really let themselves down and results like the one against Bournemouth will continue to be an issue.

To truly enhance their overall quality and get to the next level, Silva has his work cut out for him. Losing Gueye at such a crucial stage is already proving to be tough and it remains to be seen as to how the Toffees will deal with all the challenges that are yet to come.
