Leicester City opinion: Should the Foxes sign Johann Gudmundsson?

After a miserable run of six games without a win, Leicester City pulled the trigger and fired Claude Puel, replacing him with Brendan Rodgers (Telegraph). The former Liverpool boss was having an amazing time at Celtic, winning seven trophies over a three-year spell.

However, despite that, Rodgers left everything and took over Leicester City. Yet appointing a new manager means nothing if the club doesn’t back him, but the Sun has reported that the Irishman has a £200million transfer kitty.

This could prove to be instrumental in helping Leicester City become a top seven club, but only if they spend it on the right players. For the first time in a long time, the Foxes spent very smartly in the summer.

The addition of James Maddison, Ricardo Pereira and Jonny Evans reinforced key areas but one thing they failed to do was replace Riyad Mahrez directly. While James Maddison and Harvey Barnes will help achieve that together with time, the club needs a more direct replacement.

Rachid Ghezzal did arrive, with a similar tendency to cut inside and shoot with his left foot but he’s failed to make an impact.  This among many other reasons is why Claude Puel suffered in the second season at the club and it’s something that Brendan Rodgers needs to take care off.

While the club should have their own shortlists or scouting targets, one man who could do the job is Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

The 28-year-old currently plays for Premier League rivals Burnley and is among their best players by a large margin. Gudmundsson has had a good season so far, with three goals and six assists to his name.

A winger by trade, the Icelandic star is very versatile, having played everywhere in the midfield line over the course of his career. This season, Gudmundsson has played as an attacking midfielder for Burnley and has found himself drifting out wide to create more chances for the club.

In his footballing prime, Gudmundsson has perfected and honed his offensive skills exceptionally well. He’s a relentless competitor for the Clarets and being 6’1”, Gudmundsson is exceptionally strong on the ball and uses it very well.

The 28-year-old combines that and his footballing intelligence to beat opponents at will, before playing a teammate through. Gudmundsson’s vision is undeniable and so is his ability to find a teammate.

The Iceland international makes passing and crossing look very easy, with subtle killer passes. His biggest weakness is that he’s only an enthusiastic defender. No-one can doubt his defensive work rate and Gudmundsson’s relentless pressing makes it very hard for opponents to keep the ball.
