Why Leeds United should make it a priority to offer Mateusz Klich a new deal

According to the Express, Leeds United have a new contract in the pipeline for Polish international midfielder Mateusz Klich, with the report suggesting that the Whites are keen to secure the 29-year-old’s long-term future at Elland Road.

Having already outlined their ambitions by convincing Kalvin Phillips to sign a new deal, the Yorkshire giants are ready to move quickly to tie Klich down to fresh and improved terms.  (h/t Express)

The new contract for Phillips is not only a protective measure that should allow Leeds to ward off potential suitors for the in-demand star but the Whites have sent out a clear message to their rivals that they are ready to push harder than ever for promotion under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa this term.

And the fans at Elland Road might have some more reason to rejoice in the coming days, with a brand new deal for Mateusz Klich understood to be in the offing.

Klich has less than twelve months remaining on his current contract and Leeds are apparently aware of the potential risk of losing his services for absolutely nothing next summer.

The 29-year-old Polish international has established himself as one of the mainstays of the club’s midfield under Bielsa and it is easy to see why the Whites are so keen to retain his services for the longer term.

Klich, who made his move to West Yorkshire in the summer of 2017 following impressive stints at PEC Zwolle and FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie, endured a slow start to life at Elland Road, with then-manager Thomas Christiansen not particularly favouring him.

The Pole started only once in the Championship in the first half of the 2017-18 campaign before joining Utrecht on loan until the end of the season, with his future at Leeds United looking dead and buried.

However, things have taken a drastic turnaround for Klich at Elland Road in the positive direction ever since the arrival of Bielsa, who has shown a lot of confidence in the midfielder’s abilities.

The 29-year-old started each of the club’s 48 games in the Championship the last term and starred with 10 goals and 9 assists, which is undoubtedly a remarkable tally for a central midfielder in any league. And he has continued his fine run of form this season as well, starting each of Leeds’ first six league fixtures.

Along with Phillips and Adam Forshaw, Klich has emerged as one of the Argentine’s most trusted lieutenants in the middle of the park, proving his worth as a key component towards the smooth execution of the manager’s philosophy on numerous occasions over the last twelve months or so.

As a matter of fact, Klich has already racked up some eye-watering numbers this season, averaging 1.2 tackles, 2.8 key passes and 2.2 shots per game, figures which lie testament to his incredible run of form at Elland Road.

To put things into perspective, it should be an absolute no-brainer for Leeds to secure the long-term future of Mateusz Klich, given that he is expected to continue in his role as one of the mainstays of the club’s midfield, at least, while the Whites are still in the Championship.

It is still unclear whether Leeds would still have him in their plans if they secure promotion to the top-flight but it won’t be a surprise if they choose to retain him, given his previous experience in the Eredivisie.

Besides adding stability and reliability to the central midfield, Klich has somewhat filled in the void left by the departure of Samu Saiz with his creativity and vision and it is pretty clear that Leeds United need to hold on to him at all costs.

That said, the Yorkshire giants should make it a priority to offer the 29-year-old a new deal at the earliest, as they look to capitalise on a solid start to the ongoing season.
