Despite Emery’s struggle, Arsenal going for Mourinho would be a total blunder – agreed?

Why Jose Mourinho should not replace Arsenal boss Unai Emery

According to El Chiringuito (h/t Metro), former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen on replacing under-fire manager Unai Emery at Arsenal.

Mourinho is out of a job since being sacked by the Red Devils in December 2018 after they hired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an interim manager first and then made it permanent.

The Portuguese manager has turned down an offer from Lyon and is awaiting an opportunity in England.

After a series of poor results, Emery is clearly under pressure but should the Gunners turn towards Mourinho?

‘The Special One’ (h/t Metro) is one of the most successful managers in the world. He has won the Primeira Liga as well as the Premier League and there are no doubts about his abilities and tactical nous. However, let’s have a look at whether an attacking club like Arsenal would be the right destination for the defensive-minded manager.

The Gunners are known for their attacking football and high pressing, whereas Mourinho is more tactical and focuses on winning the game more than anything else.

Interestingly enough, a player like Mesut Ozil would need to increase his workload considerably to fit Mourinho’s style and that’s something the 2014 World Cup winner hardly does these days.

Arsenal are known for handing ample opportunities to youngsters while Mourinho is known for buying readymade players. Also, the Portuguese tactician does not shy away from spending big during transfer windows but at Arsenal, he would have to work with a relatively limited budget.

Emery has backed academy stars like Joseph Willock, Bukayo Saka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles to showcase their talent but their development could take a hit if Mourinho assumes the role.

Evidently, Arsenal’s traditions are exactly the opposite of Mourinho’s tactics and even if the Portuguese can produce some stunning results at the beginning of his tenure, things are unlikely to work out in the longer run.
