Why Huddersfield Town could be the ideal destination for this 26-year-old World Cup winner

According to a report by German news outlet BILD, Huddersfield Town are edging closer to signing Borussia Dortmund defender Erik Durm this summer. Incidentally, David Wagner has worked with Durm before, meaning he will be aware of the player’s strengths and weaknesses.

The duo worked together when Wagner was in charge of Dortmund’s second team. Although the 26-year-old did not feature for the German outfit last season, it must be noted that he is a World Cup and DFB Pokal winner.

The player missed out on the entirety of the previous campaign due to an injury. The report states that he is fully fit now and ready to resume training but with a year left on his contract, Dortmund could be open to the prospect of a sale.

There is no information about the price yet and that solely depends on the two clubs. But if the price is right, should Huddersfield pursue a deal for Durm? The fact that he hasn’t played since May 2017 is surely a worrisome prospect for the Terriers.

It goes without saying that the deal would be a major risk. One might argue that Dortmund are unlikely to charge a huge sum for his services but money is money and Huddersfield do not have deep financial backing like many of their Premier League rivals do.

Thus, they must be extremely calculative and cautious about their spending habits. Since Wagner has a previous connection with Durm, the move might be beneficial to a certain extent.

He is quite experienced and incredibly versatile as well. Although he is primarily a right-back, Durm can also play on the left-hand side. And incidentally enough, he can also play in an advanced role.

To be fair, when Germany won the World Cup in 2014, Durm was touted as the next big thing. He worked wonders for the Germans in Brazil but since then, a never-ending slew of injuries have severely affected his form and his confidence as well.

He missed out on securing a spot for himself in the ongoing World Cup but there is hope for him regarding his future. Joining Huddersfield would not only provide him with a second chance but would also allow him to revive his career in a fresh environment.

If he can manage his fitness issues and work hard for Wagner, he would be an upgrade when compared to the likes of Chris Lowe and Scott Malone. However, it will be a close call and only time will tell if signing him is the right move or not.
