Manchester City are firmly in the driver’s seat for the Premier League title, with them having already established an 8 point lead over 2nd placed Manchester United. It took just one season for Pep Guardiola to work his magic on the City squad as they now look like a side capable of beating the best teams in the world.
Guardiola also has his eyes on the Champions League trophy which has forever eluded Manchester City. But the Spaniard will need to add more quality to his side if he is to achieve European glory with the Cityzens.
Riyad Mahrez is one of the players being considered by Pep Guardiola to add some more depth to his squad. The Algerian has been looking for a move away from the King Power stadium over the last two seasons but things never worked out for the 26-year-old.
According to reports, Guardiola sees him as a direct replacement for Jesus Navas who left Manchester City to join his boyhood club Sevilla in the summer. Both Pep and Mahrez were seen having a small chat after Leicester’s defeat at the hands of City this past weekend. The PFA 2016 Player of the Year is slowly returning to form under the management of Claude Puel after a disappointing campaign last season.
Mahrez can be an excellent backup winger and can be extremely effective for Man City. But despite all that he could offer, Manchester City really don’t need a winger at the moment. On the hand, Leon Goretzka is probably the one they should be looking at.
Manchester City really need a new holding midfielder with both Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in their 30’s now. Adding Goretzka to the squad will help the youngster develop under the guidance of both Toure and Fernandhino before they leave the club.
The German will be a free agent next summer and Schalke might be open to exciting January bids from all big European clubs including Manchester City. Liverpool and Chelsea are also said to be interested in signing the 22-year-old.
However, the chance to work for Pep Guardiola is not something you get every day and Goretzka should have that in his mind. With Schalke looking to cash in on him before the summer, Manchester City should go all out to land the German youngster in January.
Leon Goretzka would be accompanying his international teammates, Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan at the Etihad if a deal can be reached between Schalke and Manchester City.
