Why Gerrrard’s plan to sign this 25-year-old midfield ace is a good move for Rangers

Rangers are weighing up a move for out-of-contract Hibernian FC and Scotland midfielder Dylan McGeouch in the summer, according to reports from the Scottish Sun

The 25-year-old will see his contract with the Hibs expire in a month’s time and has so far resisted the club’s attempts to get him tied down to a new deal.

The potential availability of the midfielder has alerted Rangers’ new boss Steven Gerrard, who has had his assistant Gary McAllister enquire about the situation, as per the report

McGeouch started out at Celtic before making the switch to Rangers in 2008. However, he was lured back by the Hoops four years later in 2012. Upon his return to the Parkhead, the midfielder went on to make just 27 appearances, scoring twice and assisting three more.

He spent time away on loan with Coventry City and the Hibs before arriving at the Easter Road on a permanent deal in the summer of 2015.

The 25-year-old has made 121 appearances so far for the Hibs, scoring 4 goals and setting up 8 more. In the recently concluded campaign, McGeouch made 42 appearances across all competitions, registering two assists in the process.

Having had a solid season for his club, the midfielder broke into the Scotland national team and made his debut in the 2-0 loss to Peru earlier this week.

A central midfielder who can play in a holding role or as a playmaker, the Scotsman has also been utilised on the flanks, which highlights the versatility that he brings to the table. While his midfield partner John McGinn hogged all the limelight for the Hibs this season, McGeouch’s importance to Neil Lennon’s side cannot be understated.

Assured and composed in possession, the 25-year-old hardly gives the ball away and always seems to do the right thing when he has the ball at his feet. He may not be the flashiest of the players but the stocky midfielder is a reliable presence in the middle of the park, who gets the job done.

Rangers have a plethora of options in the middle of the park, with the likes of Jason Holt, Greg Docherty, Andy Halliday, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans and Jordan Rossiter already in the ranks.

However, with the future of Halliday being doubtful and the inconsistent performances of a number of other players over the course of the last season, it makes sense that Gerrard wants to add fresh bodies to the midfield.

McGeouch would represent a solid addition. Experienced in the division, he knows what it takes to succeed at this level and the fact that he will be costing the club nothing makes it a deal worth pursuing.
