Tottenham put up a fighting display against Southampton to pick up an important 2-1 win.
Spurs had struggled in some of their previous games and were under pressure to get their season back on track.
The Saints were bolstered after Serge Aurier was sent off near the 30–minute mark, but Tottenham talisman Harry Kane scored the go-ahead goal before half-time.
The away side tried their best to get an equaliser but some great saves by Hugo Lloris provided Spurs with the three points.
Mauricio Pochettino lauded the character of the team after playing with 10 men for almost an hour, but the Argentine has been linked with a move away in recent months (h/t Daily Star).
Pochettino had also spoken about the previous Champions League final possibly being his last game for the club, but he remained at Tottenham after the summer window.
The Daily Star claims that Spurs are eyeing Gareth Southgate as their top choice to replace the Argentine. The former Middlesbrough manager has done a great job with England and would be a great replacement for Pochettino.
Taking over the England manager’s role was a big step in Southgate’s career, but he did a great job with the U21 side of the Three Lions.
The former Middlesbrough manager also finished eighth with them a few years back but had to deal with relegation too.
The 49-year-old has a lot of experience under his belt and leading England to the semi-finals of a World Cup was a fantastic result after years of disappointment.
Southgate isn’t a flashy manager or makes massive statements, which would help keep things under control at Spurs.
The Englishman has also worked wonders with several Spurs players in the national team with Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Harry Winks all developing under him.
Southgate is willing to try different formations and experiment with the side, and England are trying to play a more expansive and attacking style of football, something that Tottenham also do to an extent.
Of course, Southgate hasn’t been involved in the day-to-day running of club football recently and it will be interesting to see how he does with England at the upcoming Euros.
Southgate proved he can do well with Boro and finishing eighth with them is no small feat.
Managing Tottenham at this day and age isn’t easy given the new stadium and their push for trophies and the Champions League.
However, the England role has to be one of the toughest in the world, and Southgate is doing a fine job with that.
