Tottenham signing this established Serie A star would solve a lot of problems for Pochettino

Why Federico Bernardeschi would be a smart signing for Tottenham

Back in January 2017, a report from Evening Standard had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Federico Bernardeschi, who was then playing for Fiorentina. The report added Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the attacker and wanted to bring him to the club.

Federico Bernardeschi, 25, who moved to Juventus from Fiorentina in 2017, has struggled to get game time in Turin this season, with Juan Cuadrado cementing his place as Maurizio Sarri’s first choice on the right flank.

He has made only four appearances so far this season, scoring his first goal for the campaign in Wednesday’s Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

As far as Tottenham are concerned, it looks as though it could be a difficult year for them. They were humiliated at home by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Bayern slammed in seven goals, with former Arsenal kid Serge Gnabry standing out with four goals.

Tottenham were Champions League finalists last season, and there is a huge concern over how much they have regressed now. Mauricio Pochettino needs to freshen up his squad with a couple of additions in January.

Christian Eriksen could be sold in January if he doesn’t commit his future at the club, with the Dane having entered the final year of his contract. Eriksen has been an important player for Spurs for the last few years and his departure would certainly leave a huge void in Pochettino’s squad.

But replacing him won’t be impossible and while Bernardeschi won’t be a direct replacement, he definitely would bolster Spurs’ attacking ranks.

A strong, quick, creative, technically gifted and a hard-working player, Bernardeschi can play in a range of positions in the attack. A left-footed player, known particularly for his pace, agility and dribbling ability, as well as his powerful and accurate striking ability from outside the area, he also has the ability to make late attacking runs into the box.

With teams often pressing opponents a lot more in the Premier League, someone like Bernardeschi would be a fantastic player to have in the Tottenham side as he’s extremely press-resistant due to his spatial awareness and burst of acceleration.

Verdict

Bernardeschi’s versatility makes him a fantastic option for Tottenham, who continues to be very flexible to formations. A player like Bernardeschi would be a solution to so many problems for Spurs.
