Why Everton must do everything they can to hold onto Tom Davies

Everton have had a rather topsy-turvy campaign so far. They started out on a dismal note this season despite spending big last summer and that eventually saw Ronald Koeman get fired from his job. Now, with Sam Allardyce in charge, the Toffees have done exceedingly well under his guidance and have managed to break into the top ten.

That is quite a feat considering they were living dangerously close to the relegation zone at one point. However, more than anything else, they are likely to be very pleased with their team this season – and particularly happy about the young Tom Davies.

At 19 years of age, Davies has earned praise from a lot of pundits and critics for same reasons – his effortless style and influence. He started appearing for the club during Koeman’s tenure and has since established himself as a regular for the club. Known for his creative runs and attacking prowess, Davies can be a nightmare for even the toughest of defenders and there is absolutely no doubt that he is earmarked for a bright future.

As is the case with most promising young stars, Davies is also likely to attract attention from clubs scanning the market for an attacking midfielder, especially with the summer transfer window coming up. It remains to be seen if the teenage sensation can withstand the temptation of some tantalising offers but more than anything else, it is important for the Toffees to ensure that he stays with them for at least a season or two more.

At a time when the club were struggling, Davies was one of the very few players who offered attacking intent on a consistent basis. In the time that he has spent on the field this season, Davies has created 6 chances and has even provided a solitary assist so far.

His game is not without mistakes. There are a lot of areas where he needs to improve himself. That said, very few players display so much potential at his age and if he continues with the Merseyside club, there is no limit to what he can achieve.

Moving to a different club now would undoubtedly hamper his growth and development. He is receiving adequate game time and recognition at Everton right now – something he might have to forego if he were to move to a different club. In addition to that, his impact has become quite a necessity for Everton. Hence, going forward, they will need a player like him and Davies is likely to develop at a greater pace at Everton.
