Why Newcastle missed a trick in not signing this top midfielder who was available on loan

Why Newcastle United could regret not going for Grzegorz Krychowiak

West Bromwich Albion’s Grzegorz Krychowiak, who was there on a temporary basis from Paris Saint-Germain, has now joined Russian league champions Lokomotiv, in a deal which offers the Russian club the chance to buy the player at the end of this season.

The Poland international featured 31 times for the Baggies last season and did pretty well despite getting relegated from the Premier League. He is an impressive midfield player who could enhance the quality of any team he plays for.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are probably in need of players to shore up their midfield, however, they lack funds. For that reason, not going for Krychowiak, who was available for a loan deal this year, could just be a trick missed by the Magpies.

Here’s the reason why the former West Brom midfielder could have massively helped Newcastle next season and it is a mistake by Rafa Benitez to not even target the player:

Player Analysis – Grzegorz Krychowiak

Krychowiak is an experienced player, having appeared for several top-level clubs before, including PSG and Sevilla. At 28, he has shown his qualities and worth to become one of the best central midfielders. However, he generally struggles with consistency to perform week in week out at a higher level. This might be one of the reasons why Benitez didn’t go for him when he was available.

However, on the other hand, Krychowiak has the attributes to really dominate the midfield. He probably needs a good coach to cheer him up every week in order to get the best out of him. Maybe Benitez could have been the right man to work with.

Newcastle need enforcement in midfield and the Poland international might have aided them.

Verdict

It was always a 50-50 choice for Newcastle to decide whether or not should they go for the player. Some of the facts suggest he might not really improve the current squad, however, there is talent and potential for him to really cement his place in midfield if given an opportunity.

Leaning on the latter rationale makes more sense, because Benitez is a type of manager who loves to get the best out of players in trying circumstances. In that case, the Poland international would have benefited working under the Spaniard.
