No Toby? No problem -Tottenham signing this 26-year-old skipper from PL rivals would solve a key issue

Why Conor Coady to Tottenham would be a solid addition

Back in July, Wolves skipper Conor Coady was linked to Tottenham as Mauricio Pochettino faced the prospect of replacing Toby Alderweireld before the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Tottenham triggered an extension clause in Toby Alderweireld’s deal in December that tied him up until the summer of 2020. But by doing so, they activated a £25m clause that ran from the start of the 2019 summer transfer window until the last two weeks.

Irrespective of a cut-price release clause, not a single club made an attempt to sign the Belgium international from Tottenham in summer and as a result, he stayed at the club.

However, with the 30-year-old’s contract expiring at the end of the season, manager Mauricio Pochettino will need to start thinking for his replacement.

Not only Alderweireld, but Jan Vertonghen is also another defender whose contract expires in the summer of 2020. While Vertonghen has admitted he’s in talks with the club over a new contract, the Belgian’s performances have been average so far this season.

Perhaps, age has started catching up with the left-footed defender, who has been one of the pillars at the back for Spurs in the last few years.

To put things into perspective, Tottenham are in dire need of defensive reinforcements in January if they are to make it into the top four this season. That being said, Spurs must revive their interest in Conor Coady.

Conor Coady, 26, was a crucial figure in Wolves’ promotion to top-flight last season. He also helped the Wanderers clinch a seventh-place finish in the Premier League. This season, the 26-year-old may have looked a bit vulnerable at the back but there’s no doubting his quality and why he could improve Spurs’ defence massively.

Standing at 6ft 1in, the Liverpool-born defender is quite a presence in the air that makes him effective at both ends of the pitch. Coady is a composed passer of the ball and possesses a wide range of distribution skills.

Adept at reading the play and making key interceptions, his innate ability to be in the right spot to deal with set-pieces make him such an asset to the team.

The 26-year-old has entered the prime stages of his career and would provide a commanding presence to Spurs’ backline.

Moreover, Coady is the kind of leader Spurs have apparently lacked at the back and considering Tottenham’s defence so far this season, Pochettino should be willing to accept help in any form.

Verdict

Coady has the quality and maturity to play for a top European side like Tottenham. At 26, the former Liverpool prospect is at the right age to make the jump to a bigger club and a move to Spurs would simply be ideal for both parties involved.
