Why Chelsea shouldn’t push too hard to secure a move for Javairo Dilrosun

According to Calciomercato (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea are weighing up a swoop for Dutch winger Javairo Dilrosun, who currently plies his trade with Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga. 

The 21-year-old Dutch international is currently making waves with his fine start to the campaign in the German top-tier, which has seen the talented winger rack up 3 goals and 2 assists in 7 league appearances for Hertha Berlin.

Born in Amsterdam. Holland, to parents of Surinamese descent, Javairo Dilrosun spent eight years in the youth system at Ajax before making his move to England with Man City in 2014. 

However, the dazzling winger struggled to make the grade at the Etihad due to stiff competition for places and made 29 appearances for City’s U-23s in the Premier League 2 before departing for Hertha Berlin last summer.

The youngster’s move to Germany has paid off handsomely, and after accumulating 2 goals and 3 assists from 17 appearances in his debut season in the Bundesliga, the Dutchman has really come of age this term.

Chelsea are currently serving a two-window transfer ban imposed by FIFA for openly flouting the regulations relating to the transfer of underage players, but that hasn’t stopped the Blues from monitoring several talented youngsters across the continent with a view to strengthening their squad as and when the ban is lifted. 

Having represented The Netherlands at all age groups from U-16 to U-21, Dilrosun made his senior professional debut for his nation against Germany in the UEFA Nations League last year.

The left-footed wide player has enhanced his reputation significantly since his move to Germany and that has put him on the verge of a return to English football, with Chelsea among his list of admirers.

With Lampard calling upon the club’s youth prospects to cope with the impediment posed by the transfer ban. The Blues are currently reaping the rewards of incorporating several academy starlets like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James in their first-team. 

To that end, Chelsea’s interest in Javairo Dilrosun makes perfect sense and a move for the 1-cap Dutch international would be in perfect compliance with Lampard’s dream of building a team around young and developing players.

With Eden Hazard now out of the picture and ageing stars like Willian and Pedro also nearing the end of their illustrious tenures at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea definitely need to scour the market for some young and talented wingers for the future despite Christian Pulisic establishing himself as a key component of the team’s forward line in recent weeks. 

However, pushing too hard for a move to secure the services of Javairo Dilrosun might not be the wisest idea as far as Chelsea are concerned, given that he is still not a finished article capable of making a big impact in the highly competitive atmosphere of the Premier League. 

Verdict

Although the 21-year-old is a big talent with a lot of potential, he hasn’t shown enough in the Bundesliga just yet to convince that he is really good enough to cut the mustard at a big-six club in England.

His lack of overall contribution and the tendency to fade away from games should prompt Chelsea to monitor his progress over a longer duration of time before making a move. 

Those claims are clearly backed up by the numbers. As per whoscored, Dilrosun averages just 15 passes per game at an accuracy rate of 71.1%, including just 0.6 key passes, figures which lie testament to the fact that he is not always involved in the build-up play and certainly not yet good enough to thrive in a team like Chelsea who play a possession-based brand of football.

Hertha Berlin are not a possession-hungry side like Chelsea and given that the youngster isn’t playing for a team in the top reaches of the Bundesliga table, he could struggle to make an impact if a move to Stamford Bridge does materialize next summer, where they would be expected to challenge for trophies right from the word go. 

In other words, the pressure of expectations at Chelsea could be too much for an unproven player like him to handle all of a sudden, and he still needs a lot of grooming in terms of winning mentality and playing with the ball at his feet to thrive in the Premier League.
