According to A Bola (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham are renewing their interest in Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes when the January transfer window reopens, as a replacement for their out of sorts Danish star Christian Eriksen.
Attacking midfielder Eriksen has completed more than five years at the London club and is looking for a new challenge.
From 241 appearances, the 27-year old has amassed a total of 59 goals and 71 assists, making him one of the top performers for the Lilywhites in recent times. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
With Tottenham making their interest in Fernandes quite clear, only time can tell if the Portuguese player would be an ideal fit for the Danish dynamo.
Though the Italian league does not hold the prominence it once used to, Fernandes was lucky enough to hone his skills with Udinese and Sampdoria in Italy, beginning at a young age of 19.
In four years, the 25-year old played a total of 80 matches – both sides included. During his time in Italy, he scored 16 goals and gave 13 assists in all competitions to announce his arrival.
His performances in Italy were, however, overlooked by the Portugal national side considering his young age but champions can never be kept quiet for long.
He finally caught the selectors’ eyes as he scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists from 44 games in his first season (2017-18) back home playing for Sporting.
Since then, the Portuguese international has represented his country on three occasions. If Tottenham came knocking, the Portuguese central midfielder can certainly boast of an experience that will put him in high regard.
Unlike Eriksen, who is more of an attacking player, Fernandes can offer some versatility in the midfield.
He can go deep and build up the play, and also orchestrate attacks and contribute with goals too. This season, he has been in top-form for Sporting, with seven goals and six assists from 13 matches.
With more than half a season still left, he definitely seems ready for more action. His most dominating displays have often come when deployed in an attacking midfield role.
In the eight times he has played higher up the field, he has contributed with five goals and six assists.
At Tottenham, the right-footed midfielder has the right platform to grow as a player if Eriksen departs. He would be an ideal replacement for the Dane given the skills he possesses in his attacking arsenal.
