Why Chelsea should make a move for Aleksandr Golovin in January

Chelsea are currently under a two-window transfer embargo for breaching FIFA rules related to the transfer of minors but remain hopeful of having their punishment reduced, although they are yet to hear the verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Given that the Blues couldn’t sign a player in the summer transfer window apart from a permanent deal for last season’s loanee Mateo Kovacic, a host of new arrivals can be expected at Stamford Bridge in the near future as and when the transfer ban ends.

As per the Daily Star, Frank Lampard-managed club are unable to sign new players until next summer but have launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to have the embargo lifted by January.

Should the ban be lifted in the New Year, Lampard should focus on strengthening his defence and midfield.

As far as the midfield department is concerned, Chelsea shipped out Danny Drinkwater on loan to Burnley in the summer that left Lampard with limited options this season.

The Pensioners have quality players in the middle of the park but they don’t have the depth to compete in other cup competitions. With that in mind, the Blues must reignite their interest in AS Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin in January.

One of Russia’s star performers during last summer’s World Cup, Aleksandr Golovin, 23, was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea following the glitz and glamour tournament.

The Russian midfield ace rejected a move to Stamford Bridge and ended up joining Monaco from CSKA Moscow, instead. However, the move hasn’t worked out as per the plan for the player.

Golovin is regarded as one of Russia’s biggest talents and has the quality to play for a top European club. In spite of the transfer to Monaco not working out, he would be a really good addition to the young Chelsea side under Lampard.

The Russian international is a versatile player who can play in various roles across the midfield.

In terms of his attributes, he possesses a fantastic passing range and burst of pace to stretch the opposition defence. Golovin can protect the ball, break up play, recycle possession and pick out a pass in the final third as well.
